Postpartum Alopecia and me

by Buddy
(India)

Postpartum Alopecia was a major issue faced by me after childbirth. Also after delivery I got Hyperthyroid which caused much more hair loss.

So, I had short hair to prevent showing that I had excessive hair loss problems. I was looking into ways to get rid of this problem and consulted my gynecologist. She told me that there is nothing I could do with this problem externally.

She said it was due to changes in hormones that happened during and after delivery. So to avoid the maximum negative effect of this issue, she told me that I must take great care in my eating habits. She advised me to eat a lot of greens, fresh fruits, vegetables, sprouts and nuts regularly to avoid maximum damage.

Also, she advised me to use an Herbal Shampoo and oil to maintain my hair. As per her advice, I was able to overcome this problem after 1.5 years after delivery and my hair loss has been reduced quite a bit.

Though we can’t avoid complete hair loss, I believe we can at least find ways for new and strong hair to grow by bringing back our hormone levels to the way they were before pregnancy through our intake of a healthy and balanced diet. So my suggestion for a natural way for treating the hair problems is a healthy diet, rather than external oils and shampoos. Those will probably work but only when internal health issues are corrected.

"I just want to say in my capacity as pediatrician, teacher of pediatrics, and medical journalist, how very impressed I am by your website. I think your site is very thoughtful, not at all doctrinaire, and will be very valuable to mothers (and I think fathers, too in a second-hand sort of way) suffering from a variety of postpartum problems, of which the most common and perhaps the most serious is PPD. Anyway, thank you for your site, which I will certainly pass on to mothers in my practice."
