Vitamins and Supplements For Hair Loss


It is important to eat a healthy diet for your body to get the essential vitamins to properly nourish and strengthen hair. However, it is estimated that 8 out of 10 people don’t get enough essential vitamins in their diet.

Supplements for hair loss can be taken to restore healthy levels of vitamins and supplements that will promote hair growth. 

Hair Skin & Nails Supplements

Dietary supplements are available under the name Hair, Skin And Nails. These supplements for hair loss provide a combination of several key vitamins and minerals and other nutrients to support and maintain healthy hair (as well as skin, and nails).

Below are the main vitamins and minerals which make up most Hair Skin and Nails supplements.

Vitamin A (Beta Carotene)

Beta Carotene is a powerful antioxidant that helps prevent free radical damage to the body. 

Vitamin C

Vitamin C has many health benefits, but it is largely recognized for supporting immune function and as a potent antioxidant and cell protector. It plays an essential role in protecting the body from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. It helps to neutralize the potentially harmful reactions in the blood and the fluids surrounding the cells. Vitamin C may also protect other antioxidants, such as Vitamin E.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is known to be an effective fat-soluble antioxidant that prevents the oxidation of lipids. Since cell membranes are composed of lipids, it is critical to the stability and integrity of cellular tissues and membranes in the body. Its effectiveness is increased when taken with other antioxidants, especially Beta Carotene, Vitamin C, and Selenium.

Biotin

Biotin is a member of the Vitamin B complex, although it is not actually a vitamin. It is a coenzyme that works with vitamins. Biotin gets its name from the Greek word bios, which means "life" and is necessary for the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and protein.

Biotin is involved in energy metabolism and helps enable the body to use glucose. Essential for cell growth and replication, it helps form and maintain chemical structures in keratin (the major protein found in hair and nails). Since Biotin is water-soluble, any excess will be eliminated in the urine.

Iodine

Iodine is a trace mineral that is essential for healthy thyroid function. Iodine also provides the crucial building blocks for the hormones secreted by the thyroid gland. Iodine's only known function is the role it plays in proper thyroid function.

Healthy thyroid function is important for abnormal metabolism, oxygen consumption, and energy production. The iodine-dependent hormones that are produced by the thyroid control such functions as body temperature, physical growth, reproduction, and the growth of skin and hair.

Selenium

Selenium is a trace mineral and is a potent antioxidant. It works in tandem with Vitamin E to protect cells from free radicals. Selenium is an important part of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which works with Vitamin E to help prevent free radical damage to cell membranes. Selenium also protects the body form heavy metal toxicity. *It is important to note that Selenium is toxic at doses of more than one milligram per day. 

Other Important Vitamins For Hair Loss

Biotin:

Biotin is one of the best vitamins for hair loss. Biotin is one of the B vitamins and is well-known for its ability to strengthen hair. It can also help prevent breakage by improving the elasticity of the hair. Biotin can help the hair follicles become stronger and thicker.

Biotin has the most impact on hair growth when taken as a supplement as it would be difficult to consume enough Biotin in even a healthy diet to make a difference in hair loss.

B Complex:

The B vitamins were once thought to be a single vitamin, referred to as vitamin B, but they were later found to be chemically distinct vitamins that are often found in the same foods. Supplements that contain a variety of B vitamins are referred to as a vitamin B complex. The individual B vitamin supplements are referred to by their specific name (Vitamin B2, B12, etc.)

B complex vitamin can work very well for hair loss. Niacin (Vitamin B3), aids circulation at the scalp which stimulates the production of new hair. Vitamin B5 has a similar effect. Folic acid (Vitamin B9), can also help hair to grow.

Vitamin E:

Vitamin E is another great vitamin for hair loss. Vitamin E helps the circulation of the scalp (as well as circulation to all parts the body), which stimulates the production of new hair. *It is important to note that Vitamin E can thin the blood if taken in excess.

Eating a healthy diet of foods rich in these vitamins and/or taking supplements for hair loss can help with postpartum alopecia.
